MEET
Marie-Eve

Former Patient/Founder of KRABEO

For Marie-Eve, melanoma has shaped more than one chapter of her life. It has taught her the importance of trusting her instincts, advocating for her health, and turning a difficult experience into something that could help protect others.

More than 16 years ago, at just 24 years old, Marie-Eve noticed a mole on her back that wouldn’t stop itching. At the time, tanning salons were a regular part of her routine. With naturally fair skin, she would visit several times a week to make sure she kept up with her tan.

It was actually the owner of her local tanning salon who encouraged her to have the mole checked by a doctor. A few weeks later, she did, and what followed was the beginning of her experience with melanoma; an experience that would affect her life for years to come.

As time passed, Marie-Eve began to feel as though cancer was behind her. Then, in September 2021, she noticed a small lump in her right groin.

Several doctors initially believed it was harmless or inflammatory, but Marie-Eve felt that something wasn’t right. She continued asking questions and pushing for further investigation.

“When there is a feeling that something is wrong, you have to follow through with your questions.”

Her instincts were right. Further testing revealed that her melanoma had returned.

In November 2021, Marie-Eve was told for the second time that she had cancer.

“You never get used to this kind of news,” she says. What followed was a difficult stretch of appointments and testing through the holiday season as Marie-Eve, her husband, and her family tried to understand what the recurrence would mean.

At first, Marie-Eve hesitated to share what she was going through, even with her own children. Over time, however, she came to understand the importance of sharing our experiences, both the good and the difficult, in the hope that they might help someone else.

“My story may be yours too.”

Turning experience into action

Marie-Eve’s experience with melanoma also made her realize how much more awareness was needed around skin cancer prevention and proper sun protection.

Wanting to help others protect themselves and their families, she founded KRABĒO, a Quebec-made swimwear and beachwear brand offering UV-protective clothing designed to block at least 98% of UVA and UVB rays.

For Marie-Eve, KRABĒO became a way to transform her own experience with melanoma into meaningful action. When she sees children and families wearing her designs, she knows that something born from one of the most difficult experiences of her life is now helping others enjoy the outdoors while staying better protected from the sun.

That shared commitment to melanoma prevention and education also helped bring Marie-Eve into the Save Your Skin Foundation community.

Over the years, Marie-Eve has become much more than a community member. She has become a friend of the Foundation, working alongside us on numerous campaigns and initiatives to raise awareness about melanoma, sun safety and prevention.

Through KRABĒO, her advocacy and her willingness to openly share her own experience, Marie-Eve has continually helped us reach more people with an important message: protect your skin, know your body, and speak up when something doesn’t feel right.

Her story embodies so much of what our community has been built around over the past 20 years — people taking what they have experienced and using it to educate, advocate for and support others.

We are grateful to have had Marie-Eve and KRABĒO alongside us for so many of those moments, and even more grateful for the friendship that has grown along the way.

As we celebrate 20 years of Save Your Skin Foundation, we’re proud to share Marie-Eve’s story as one of our 20 Voices — recognizing the people whose experiences, advocacy and friendship have helped shape our community into what it is today.
